He was sentenced to 10 years&#8217; transportation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 9pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">He was held awaiting transportation in the prison hulk <em>Ganymede <\/em>[<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">prison hulk: a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 7pt;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;\">decommissioned ship used as a floating prison &#8211; see <a href=\"http:\/\/wapedia.mobi\/en\/British_prison_hulks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: black;\">http:\/\/wapedia.mobi\/en\/British_prison_hulks<\/span><\/a>]<\/span>. This was originally the French frigate <em>H\u00e9b\u00e9, <\/em>captured                                      in 1809, converted into a prison  hulk in 1819 and broken up shortly after John was moved on in 1838. The  Ganymede hulk records                                     state that John was <span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;<\/span>received from  the gaol at Lincoln on 3 May 1838, having been convicted of stealing soap, candles                                     etc.&#8221;.&nbsp; It was noted that he was a labourer, had a wife and one child, and could read, although there                                     was no indication that he could write.&nbsp; The &#8216;gaoler&#8217;s report&#8217; describes him as having been &#8220;several                                     times convicted of poaching, character very bad, connections very indifferent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that John&#8217;s wife, Esther, died&nbsp;[<span style=\"font-size: 9pt;\">GRO Death Index 1838 Q3 Bourn 14 163 &#8211; Esther CLOSE<\/span>]  while he was                                     awaiting transportation. The child  was possibly Louisa CLOSE, b 1835, recorded in the 1841 census <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">[<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;\">HO107\/615\/21 F47 P35]<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span>&nbsp;living with William and Ann SMITH and family,                                     who may have been Esther&#8217;s parents.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">John was transported to New South Wales on the convict ship <em>John Barry<\/em>,                                     which set sail on<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> 12 November 1838. <span style=\"color: black; font-size: 9pt;\">[<\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 9pt;\">Australian Convict Transportation Register 1837-1838 HO11\/11 F192]<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was a 520-ton                                     sailing ship, on its 4th voyage as a convict transport, captained by Mr John Robson.&nbsp; It  arrived at Sydney                                     Cove, NSW (located between the  present-day Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge) on 22 March 1839.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Things seem to have looked up once                                     he reached Australia.&nbsp; Convicts who stayed out of trouble could be eligible for Tickets of Leave, similar                                     to today&#8217;s parole or probation arrangements. John received a ticket of leave <span style=\"color: black; font-size: 9pt;\">[<\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 9pt;\">44\/1134 and 45\/1396]<\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 9pt;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to remain in the Camden district of New South Wales.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; over the next 22  years with 11 children,                                     10 of whom survived into adulthood  and married.&nbsp; As a result John and his descendants have made a substantial                                     contribution to the populatio<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">n of<\/span><\/span> New South Wales.&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;helvetica neue&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">John died on 19 April 1873 at Bob&#8217;s Range, Camden, New South Wales, aged 57.&nbsp;                                     The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.one-name.org\/profiles\/close.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CLOSE one-name study<\/a> has records of 127 of John&#8217;s descendants in Australia named CLOSE &#8211; and his five daughters and many granddaughters added even more branches bearing other surnames to the family tree.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: black; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-family: &quot;verdana&quot; , &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif; small;\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">Sussex, emigrated as a child) but was understandably silent about her husband&#8217;s early life<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, saying only &#8220;Both were very highly respected residents.&#8221;&nbsp; S<span style=\"font-size: small;\">o it seems he turne<span style=\"font-size: small;\">d out well in the <span style=\"font-size: small;\">end!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span
